Telstars U16 and U18 squads will be travelling to Barbados in July
for the ‘Summer Fest’, a competition run over a week
with at least five games each. The tournament was previously only
open to teams from Barbados but in the last three years clubs from
all over the world have been allowed to participate. Anita says
it will be competitive but is confident of our chances to do well.
It is run on an Olympic basis and starts with an opening ceremony
at the Sir Garfield Sobers Cricket Centre. Netball was introduced
to Barbados in the 1940s and is now the most popular female sport
in the Carribean.
It will be very hot so the girls have royal blue dresses, with
red and white piping, for the tour. An Erith company, W Smith
Packaging, is sponsoring the girls’ dresses. See photos.
In their second week, after the competition, the girls will
be able to top up their tans and sample Barbados life. Most of
the older girls will be going off to university this year so
this will be a good finale until they return.
